Class 12 student dies after jumping into Bhakra Canal in Patiala

Family alleges a female student was harassing him and pressuring him over money.

A 17-year-old Class 12 student died after allegedly jumping into the Bhakra Canal in Patiala, with his family alleging that a female student had been harassing him and pressuring him for money, police said.

The teenager’s body was recovered from the canal and sent to the mortuary for postmortem examination, Station House Officer of Bakshiwala police station Sukhdev Singh said.

According to the student’s father, Kuldeep Singh, his son had told him that a girl was allegedly troubling him and putting pressure on him for money. He claimed that he subsequently visited the school and informed the principal and another teacher about the matter.

The family further said that the boy and the girl had been communicating for a long time and had also spoken over the phone until late at night before the incident happened. The father claimed that after the school management was informed, the girl’s family was asked not to send her to school.

According to Kuldeep Singh, he received information about the incident around September 17-18. He said his son had left home in the afternoon and the family later learnt that he had jumped into the Bhakra Canal.

The family has sought strict action in the matter.

SHO Sukhdev Singh said police had received information that a youth had jumped into the Bhakra Canal. The body was subsequently recovered and kept at the mortuary for postmortem, he said.

The SHO said further action would be taken on the basis of statements given by the family. He said the deceased was around 17 years old and a was Class 12 student.

Police are investigating the matter, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, he said.
