Dharamshala, August 11

Around 400 gram panchayats in Kangra district will be provided high-speed internet connectivity under the BharatNet project, with work to expand the fibre network progressing across the district.

BSNL Dharamshala Senior General Manager Dr Vipin Kumar Maurya said fibre-laying work was underway across eight blocks of Kangra to connect rural panchayats with high-speed internet and digital services.

He said work in Bhawarna block was almost complete, while construction was continuing in Pragpur, Panchrukhi, Sulah, Fatehpur and Indora, among other areas.

He added that BharatNet connections had already started in Bhawarna and Pragpur, with around 28 to 30 connections provided so far.

Dr Maurya said around 225 gram panchayats in Kangra had already come onto the system and were ready to provide connections. He explained that services were being started in panchayats where electricity connections and the required equipment had been installed.

He said the BharatNet project was using FTTH (Fibre to the Home) technology to provide fibre networks, internet connectivity and digital services to gram panchayats.

He explained that the network was also being developed on a ring-system model. He said this would help maintain connectivity from an alternative direction if a cable fault occurred at one location, allowing services to be restored through another route.
