Patiala, April 30

The Shiromani Akali Dal on Thursday staged protests across Punjab against prolonged power cuts, with a major demonstration held in Patiala targeting the state government over the ongoing electricity crisis.

Amid rising concerns over frequent and prolonged power outages, the Shiromani Akali Dal organised statewide protests outside district administrative offices, accusing the Punjab government of failing to ensure adequate electricity supply.

In Patiala, a large number of party leaders and workers gathered to register their protest. Addressing the gathering, constituency in-charge Jaspal Singh Bittu Chattha alleged that the state, which once had surplus power during Akali Dal’s tenure, is now grappling with severe shortages.

He claimed that both rural and urban areas are facing extended power cuts, with little to no supply during the day and continued outages even at night. He further criticised the state leadership, saying that despite tall claims by the Chief Minister, the ground situation reflects a deepening power crisis.

Chattha also warned that the situation could worsen during the upcoming paddy season, when farmers require uninterrupted electricity for irrigation, raising concerns about the government’s preparedness to meet increased demand.

Among those present at the protest were Amrinder Singh Bajaj, constituency in-charge (Patiala Urban), and Amit Rathi.

The protests were part of a coordinated statewide agitation by the Shiromani Akali Dal to highlight the issue and press for immediate corrective measures.
