India is on the brink of a significant legal milestone as officials intensify efforts to extradite Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed more than 170 people. According to official sources, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and top officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs are personally monitoring the high-profile extradition case. A multi-agency team has travelled to the United States to finalise legal procedures and complete documentation with American authorities, according to media reports.
Rana, currently in US custody, is expected to be brought to India “shortly,” where he will face trial for his alleged role in planning and facilitating the attacks that shook the nation and drew global condemnation. The development follows a landmark ruling by the US Supreme Court, which cleared the way for Rana’s extradition to India. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar welcomed the court’s decision on Wednesday, stating, “There’s nothing really new that I can say on the Tahawwur Rana issue. Obviously, we welcome the decision of the American legal process.”
Rana, a Pakistani-born Canadian-American businessman, has been a subject of international legal scrutiny for years. Indian authorities have long sought his extradition in connection with the coordinated attacks on Mumbai landmarks, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. His return would mark a significant step forward in India’s pursuit of justice for the victims of one of the country’s deadliest terror incidents.
