The entire city is glowing with the festive spirit of Diwali. Markets are illuminated with colourful lights, homes are adorned with beautiful decorations, and every street seems to have come alive with the magic of the festival. As night falls, the city transforms into a breathtaking spectacle, with every corner shimmering in its own brilliance.

These lights are more than just decorations; they symbolise hope, positivity and the triumph of light over darkness. Yet, amid all this glitter, there is a certain poignancy that is difficult to ignore. For those living away from home, the festive brightness often highlights what is missing — the warmth of family, the comfort of belonging and the familiar feeling of celebrating together under one roof.

Life in the city moves at an exhausting pace. People are caught up in demanding work schedules, endless responsibilities and everyday stress. Everyone seems to be rushing somewhere, preparing for the festivities or hurrying back home. The markets are bustling, the streets are crowded, and excitement fills the air. But somewhere beneath all this celebration lies a longing for something much simpler: the peace that only home can offer.

Perhaps that is the irony of these dazzling lights. They illuminate the city beautifully, yet they cannot always reveal the emotions hidden behind the glitter. They can brighten streets, decorate buildings and transform markets, but they cannot fill the emptiness of being away from loved ones. No amount of external brightness can replace the warmth of familiar faces and shared moments.

Even the beautifully decorated markets of Sector 22, particularly the Shastri Market, carry a different meaning when you walk through them away from your family. Their lights are mesmerising, their festive energy infectious, but they also bring back memories of home. They remind me of the decorations, the laughter, the togetherness and the simple happiness of celebrating Diwali with my loved ones.

I find myself eagerly waiting for the day when I can return home and experience the festival in its truest form. Because when I am surrounded by my family, it won’t be just the lights that shine — I will glow with a happiness that no cityscape, however beautiful, can ever recreate.

After all, the glitter of a city and the glow of a home are two very different things. One can dazzle your eyes, but the other touches your soul. And perhaps that is what Diwali truly means: not just illuminating our surroundings, but finding light, love and peace in the presence of those who make a place feel like home.

Because the brightest Diwali is not necessarily the one with the most lights, but the one celebrated with the people who make life meaningful.
