The Centre has provided X-category security to Sukhpal Kaur, wife of deceased Gulzar Singh, following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to the family. Three security personnel have been deployed, with at least one guard expected to remain with the family at all times.
The security arrangement was made following intelligence inputs and an assessment of the threat to the family, according to a relative of Sukhpal Kaur. The family was informed about the allocation through a telephone call on the morning before the statement was made.
A relative of Sukhpal Kaur said the family had been facing threats and living under constant fear. He said the decision followed Amit Shah’s interaction with the family, during which the Home Minister was apprised of their circumstances.
Speaking to reporters, Sukhpal Kaur said the family had earlier been afraid and was compelled to stay away from home at relatives’ places due to security concerns.
She said the security arrangement had brought considerable relief and expressed confidence that the family would receive justice. She also acknowledged the efforts of Amit Shah and BJP leaders in facilitating the security cover.
Gulzar Singh’s son, Lakhwinder, also referred to the pressure allegedly being exerted by the administration and opposition groups. He said the support had strengthened the family’s fight for justice.
The family has now demanded strict action against all those accused in the case and sought justice.
