Pargat Singh knows something about pressure. Before entering politics, he was one of India’s leading hockey players, representing the country at three Olympic Games — Seoul in 1988, Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996. He captained India at Barcelona and Atlanta.
The fighting spirit and team ethic that defined him on the hockey field may now be his greatest political assets. Congress has handed Pargat Singh one of the party’s most difficult assignments, leading its Punjab unit into the 2027 assembly election at a time when the party remains divided and several senior leaders have competing ambitions. His appointment was significant precisely because he was not the obvious choice.
Names such as Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Vijay Inder Singla were among those being discussed. Channi, in particular, has a strong political base and supporters who see him as a potential chief ministerial face.
But choosing Channi could also have been interpreted as Congress projecting him for the top job in Punjab. That could have deepened existing divisions rather than settled them. Singh, by contrast, was seen as a relatively neutral choice. For a party trying to prevent another internal battle before an election, that may have been his biggest advantage.
The change also came after Raja Warring was removed as Punjab Congress president. Warring had openly expressed his displeasure over the manner in which he was replaced, and his interviews after submitting his resignation to Rahul Gandhi made clear that the transition had not been entirely smooth. The timing of the change matters.
Congress appointed Sachin Pilot as its general secretary in charge of Punjab on September 5, replacing Bhupesh Baghel. Soon afterwards, Punjab’s senior Congress leaders met Pilot in Delhi and he visited the state to participate in a protest against the AAP government.
The leadership change that followed suggested that the Congress high command had decided it could not afford prolonged organisational friction with an election approaching.
The decision was not simply Pilot’s. The final political call was made at the top of the Congress leadership, involving Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party president Mallikarjun Kharge. But changing a state president does not automatically change a party’s internal politics.
That is the real challenge facing Pargat Singh.
He has been elected MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment three times. His political journey has not been linear. He was associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal, later worked with Navjot Singh Sidhu around the Awaaz-e-Punjab initiative and eventually joined Congress.
He therefore brings political experience and an understanding of Punjab’s competing political camps. But leading a divided Congress is a different game from winning an election or representing a constituency.
His first moves suggest that he understands the urgency. After elected as president, Singh visited the home of former prime minister Manmohan Singh and sought the blessings of his wife, Gursharan Kaur. The gesture was more than ceremonial. By invoking Manmohan Singh’s simplicity, integrity and service, Singh was also presenting the values he wants associated with his own leadership. His early political messaging has been equally clear.
After meeting Rahul Gandhi, Pargat Singh said the interaction had given him “renewed energy” to strengthen the Congress organisation in Punjab. “It was a privilege to meet Leader of Opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi Ji. I am grateful for his guidance, encouragement and unwavering commitment to the cause of Punjab and its people,” Singh wrote on X. He said he would work with Congress leaders, workers and the people of Punjab to strengthen the party and “build a better future for Punjab”.
On the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s latest decision in a corruption case linked to the chief minister’s office, Singh called for a fair, impartial, transparent and time-bound investigation. He argued that anyone responsible for losses to the Punjab exchequer should be held accountable, regardless of their political influence. This is an important line of attack for Congress.
He has repeatedly stressed that Congress leaders and workers must fight together. That may sound routine for a newly appointed state president, but in Punjab it is perhaps the most important political task before him.Congress cannot afford a campaign in which its leaders spend more energy fighting each other than challenging the AAP, BJP and Akali Dal.Singh also has very little time to build that unity.
The 2027 election will not wait for Congress to settle every internal disagreement. The party must decide its political narrative, strengthen its organisation and reassure workers that its senior leaders are prepared to fight together.
Singh’s first advantage is that he has arrived without carrying the baggage of being seen as the undisputed leader of one faction.
His greatest weakness could be the same thing, neutrality can bring people together, but it does not automatically produce authority.
Hockey taught Pargat Singh the importance of playing as a team. Punjab politics will test whether he can make that philosophy work beyond the field.
His message after taking charge was confident, with the collective strength of Congress leaders, workers and the people of Punjab, he believes the party can win the 2027 assembly election. That is now more than a social media statement.
It is a political test — for Pargat Singh and for Congress itself.
