Men’s recurve team wins silver; Nethra Kumanan takes sailing bronze; tally reaches 75
Chandigarh: India added two gold, one silver and two bronze medals to its Asian Games tally on Day 14, with boxing, archery, sailing and the men’s quadrant event contributing to the haul.
Parveen Hooda won gold for India in the women’s 65-kg boxing category after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin 3-2 in a closely contested final.
Ankush Panghal also won gold in the men’s 80-kg boxing final, defeating South Korea’s Kim Minseong.
India secured silver in the men’s recurve team event. Dhiraj Bommadevara, Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhoge finished runners-up after losing 1-5 to South Korea in the final.
Sujeet Kalkal entered the men’s 65-kg freestyle wrestling final. In the final against Tajikistan’s Abdulmazhid Kudiev, he won a closely contested bout 10-9.
India also secured a bronze medal in the men’s quadrant event. The Indian team lost 0-2, with scores of 12-15 and 13-15, to hosts Japan in the semifinal. The bronze-winning squad comprised Akash Yumnam, Bobby Kumar, Malemnganba Singh, Sorokhaibam, Ram Kumar Sharma, Lokhon Singh Elangbam and Arun.
The result marked India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in the men’s quadrant event.
Sailor Nethra Kumanan added another bronze in the women’s Dinghy (ILCA 6) event. The 29-year-old from Chennai entered the two-race final series with seven recalculated points from the earlier qualifiers and finished with 14 net points.
Kumanan finished level with Hong Kong’s Stephanie Louise Norton but secured the bronze medal through a tiebreak rule.
India’s medal tally stood at 75, comprising 15 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze medals, on Day 14 so far.
