Indian skipper hits 223 off 133 balls, Rohit Sharma scores 101 as India chase down West Indies’ 405 for seven with eight wickets to spare

India produced a record-breaking chase in Guwahati as captain Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma powered the hosts past a 406-run target against the West Indies in the second ODI on Wednesday.
West Indies posted 405/7 in their 50 overs, with John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo scoring centuries. In reply, India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs, with Gill making 223 off 133 balls and Rohit scoring 101 off 75 while Virat Kohli scored 29. India won by eight wickets with 39 balls to spare.
Gill’s innings was the centrepiece of India’s chase. The India captain brought up his second ODI double-century, having previously scored 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023. ICC records confirm that Gill is now only the second batter in men’s ODI cricket to score multiple double-centuries, after Rohit Sharma.
Gill also reached his century in only 62 balls, making it the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian captain. His double-century came from 117 balls, making it the fastest ODI double-century recorded. He struck 24 fours and seven sixes in his innings.
The double-century was another landmark in Gill’s rapidly expanding ODI record. His first 200 came against New Zealand in 2023, when he scored 208 from 149 balls. ICC records show that Rohit Sharma remains the only batter to have scored more than two ODI double-centuries, with three to his name.
Gill’s latest hundred was also his third consecutive ODI century in India. He had scored 110 in the first ODI of the series at Thiruvananthapuram, where India won by eight wickets. ICC recorded that victory after Gill and Virat Kohli scored centuries in India’s successful chase of 296.
Rohit Sharma provided the perfect support at the other end, scoring 101. His century came alongside another major milestone as he crossed 12,000 ODI runs, becoming only the seventh batter overall and the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the mark.
Rohit’s career record remains highlighted by his 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, still the highest individual score in men’s ODI cricket. He is also the only batter to have recorded three ODI double-centuries.
India’s chase came after West Indies posted 405/7, their highest ODI total, with centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. The visitors’ total put India in pursuit of a target beyond their previous highest successful ODI chase.
Notably, India’s previous highest successful ODI chase was 362/1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013. The 406-run target in Guwahati therefore required India to set a new national benchmark.
The victory also continued India’s strong start to the series. In the opening ODI at Thiruvananthapuram, India chased 296 in 41.4 overs, with Gill scoring 110 and Kohli remaining unbeaten on 139. Kohli also became the second batter after Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs, while the ICC confirmed he reached the landmark in 315 innings, the fastest in the format.
Gill was named India’s ODI captain for the West Indies series by the BCCI. The squad announcement lists Gill as captain and KL Rahul as vice-captain, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also included in the ODI squad.
The third and final ODI between India and West Indies will be played on October 3 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh, starting at 2 pm IST, according to the BCCI schedule.
