Former minister and five-time MLA died after cardiac arrest

Former Himachal Pradesh minister and five-time MLA Major Vijay Singh Mankotia was accorded military honours at his funeral in Kangra on Wednesday, a day after he died following cardiac arrest, officials said. 

The administration accorded him a guard of honour in accordance with the prescribed guidelines for state funerals, Kangra Sub-Divisional Magistrate Dr Anjali Garg said. Officials, including the SDMs of Kangra and Shahpur, were present during the funeral proceedings.

Mankotia’s death has drawn condolences from political leaders across Kangra district and Himachal Pradesh.

Former minister Sarveen Chaudhary said Mankotia had remained active in Shahpur politics for a long period and had also played a significant role in state politics. She described his death as the loss of an experienced leader and guide for party workers and supporters.

Chaudhary said Mankotia had worked with different political parties and contested several elections during his political career. She also recalled his long association with the people of Shahpur and said he remained active until the later years of his life.

Dharamshala BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma described Mankotia’s death as a major loss to the politics of Kangra and Himachal Pradesh. Sharma said Mankotia had been a prominent voice from Kangra and had remained active in public life for several years.

Sharma said he had known Mankotia since he was about eight years old and recalled his association with Shahpur and Kangra.

Mankotia served as a minister in the Himachal Pradesh government and represented the Shahpur Assembly constituency five times. His death on Tuesday following cardiac arrest was followed by condolences from political leaders and supporters in the region.
