Party’s state spokesperson Barsain seeks transparency in poll panel’s decision-making and electoral roll revision

Congress state spokesperson Sunil Barsain on Tuesday raised questions over the functioning of the Election Commission of India, alleging a lack of transparency in its internal decision-making process and seeking clarity on several issues related to electoral rolls and the conduct of elections.

At a press conference in Dharamshala, Barsain referred to the Election Commission’s (EC) September 26 press conference and questioned how decisions were taken during commission meetings.

Barsain claimed that meeting agendas were not circulated in advance and alleged that decisions taken during meetings were not always communicated to other Election Commissioners. He also referred to the Election Commission’s June 24, 2025, notification and questioned the process of adding and deleting names from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

The Congress spokesperson further alleged that several decisions in recent months had raised concerns about the poll panel’s internal functioning. He also raised issues concerning the electoral process in Bihar and West Bengal, calling for greater transparency and clear answers from the authorities.

Barsain also questioned the provisions related to the legal protection for Election Commission officials introduced in 2023. Seeking clarification from the Centre, he said decisions taken by a constitutional body such as the Election Commission should be subject to transparency and accountability.
