Congress demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation

The Himachal Pradesh Congress on Friday staged a protest outside the Election Department office in Shimla against the functioning of the Election Commission of India and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Led by state Congress president Vinay Kumar, the protest was attended by party in-charge Rajni Patil, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, ministers and other party leaders and workers.

Congress workers burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gyanesh Kumar during the demonstration. They also removed the nameplate outside the Election Department office and wrote slogans on the premises.

Patil said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had been raising concerns over alleged “vote chori” and claimed that irregularities had been reported in Haryana, Maharashtra and other states. She demanded the removal of Gyanesh Kumar.

The party also raised concerns over the revision of electoral rolls and alleged that the Election Commission had failed to adequately address questions surrounding the process. Congress leaders demanded action against the CEC, including registration of a case and his arrest.

The party claimed that 13 crore people had been deprived of their votes, alleging that the electoral roll revision posed a threat to voters’ rights. These were Congress’s allegations.

The protest was part of the Congress’s nationwide campaign against the Election Commission’s functioning and the electoral roll revision.
