BJP leader rejects speculation about former Punjab CM returning to Congress

Patiala, September 7

BJP leader Jai Inder Kaur on Monday dismissed speculation about former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh returning to the Congress, saying she and her family would remain with the BJP and that no one was going back to the Congress.

Speaking to reporters in Patiala, Kaur said rumours about Amarinder Singh returning to the Congress surfaced periodically and alleged that the opposition party had enough internal issues of its own.

She said the family was firmly with the BJP and was preparing for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections “with full force”.

Kaur was speaking after visiting Rajindra Hospital in Patiala to enquire about the health of Mohanjit Singh Sheron, who was admitted there following allegations of assault in custody involving Sangrur police.

She also raised concerns over another case involving Gulzar Singh, a resident of Toor Banjara Kalan village near Dirba in Sangrur district.

According to Kaur, Gulzar Singh had raised questions at a programme of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema held in his village two days earlier. She alleged that he was subsequently subjected to “mental torture” by the police.

Kaur alleged that Gulzar Singh consumed a poisonous substance in an attempt to end his life and was brought to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. She claimed that he did not receive the required medical treatment there and subsequently had to be shifted to a private hospital.

Kaur alleged that the government was subjecting people who raised questions to such treatment and that victims were also being denied adequate medical assistance.

She also questioned the situation at Rajindra Hospital, pointing out that Patiala is the home town of the state health minister.
