‘Apple to unveil first foldable iPhone on September 9’

iPhone 18 Pro also likely to debut; foldable one may cost around Rs 2 lakh in India; iPhone 17 Pro gets Rs 5,000 price cut

Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its September 9 event, marking the company’s entry into a smartphone segment dominated by Samsung and other manufacturers.

Apple has confirmed the event, titled “Surprise and shine”, for Wednesday at 10.30 pm IST, but has not disclosed details of the products it plans to launch.

Reports suggest the foldable device could carry a price tag of more than $2,000, translating to roughly Rs 2 lakh or more in India, though the company has not confirmed its price or specifications. The device is expected to feature a book-style folding design and could be positioned as Apple’s premium smartphone.

Reportedly, foldable phones currently account for about 2 per cent of global smartphone sales.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have received a Rs 5,000 price cut on Flipkart ahead of the new launch. The iPhone 17 Pro is now listed at Rs 1,29,900, down from Rs 1,34,900, while the Pro Max is available at Rs 1,44,900 against its original price of Rs 1,49,900. Bank offers can bring the effective prices down further.

The launch will also be the first major iPhone event under John Ternus, who became Apple CEO on September 1 after succeeding Tim Cook. Apple had earlier quoted Ternus as saying he was “profoundly grateful” for the opportunity and “filled with optimism” about what the company could achieve.

The event is expected to include new iPhone 18 Pro models and software updates, with Apple’s first foldable likely to be the biggest attraction.
