Kullu, August 17
The BJP on Monday staged a protest in Dhalpur, Kullu district, against senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, accusing her of disrespecting ‘Vande Mataram’ during its rendition at an Independence Day program.
A rally was also held as part of the protest, attended by former minister and BJP leader Govind Singh Thakur.
Thakur alleged that ‘Vande Mataram’ was being played during the program when Sonia Gandhi asked for it to be stopped midway. He said a video of the incident was circulating widely and alleged that the act amounted to disrespecting the national song.
He claimed that the government had laid down rules regarding the rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ and said it should be completed as prescribed.
Thakur further alleged that Sonia Gandhi gestured towards Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi during the program, leading to confusion.
Calling ‘Vande Mataram’ an important symbol of the country’s freedom struggle and national sentiment, Thakur said an inquiry should be conducted into the incident. He demanded strict legal action if the alleged disrespect by senior Congress leaders was established.
The BJP leader accused the Congress of having indulged in “anti-national activities” in the past and said his party would not compromise on issues related to national unity, integrity and patriotism.
Thakur demanded that the Congress apologize to the country over the alleged disrespect to ‘Vande Mataram’.
