11 warders and four inmates were injured, with cases registered against both sides after the dispute escalated during medical treatment.
Dharamshala, August 17
A clash broke out between inmates and jail warders at Dharamshala District Jail on Sunday after an argument escalated into a physical altercation. Police and a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) arrived soon after the incident and brought the situation under control. Police registered cases based on complaints from both sides.
Kangra Superintendent of Police Kulbhushan Verma said 11 jail warders and four inmates were injured in the clash. Following the dispute, one inmate allegedly broke a jail window, causing injuries to himself and some warders. Two warders with serious injuries were referred from Dharamshala Hospital to Tanda Medical College.
Among the four injured inmates, one was also referred to Tanda, while the remaining three were treated at Dharamshala Hospital and discharged.
Police teams from the district and Sadar Dharamshala Police Station, along with the QRT, reached the jail after receiving information about the incident and brought the situation under control.
SP Verma said cases have been registered against all four inmates under relevant sections of the Prisoners Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A separate case of assault has also been registered against the jail warders based on the inmates’ complaint.
According to the SP, three of the four inmates are undertrials in cases before the Nalagarh court and were shifted from Nalagarh Jail to Dharamshala Jail some time ago. The dispute reportedly intensified following an argument during medical treatment.
Regarding the possibility of keeping the inmates in a separate barrack, the SP said the decision falls under the prison department’s jurisdiction and will be handled by the jail superintendent.
