PU tightens campus security ahead of Independence Day, students’ council elections

Panjab University (PU) has tightened security arrangements on its campus ahead of Independence Day celebrations and the upcoming Panjab University Campus Students’ Council elections, with every vehicle being checked before being allowed entry.

The heightened security comes as the university prepares for Independence Day celebrations on August 15 and gears up for the student election season. Security measures include stricter vehicle checks and increased monitoring at campus entry points.

The university campus is spread across around 550 acres in Sectors 14 and 25 and has 74 teaching and research departments along with several centres. According to the latest available figures, around 18,800 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students are enrolled at the university. 

The Panjab University Campus Students’ Council elections are a significant feature of campus politics. The 2026 elections are likely to be held in the first week of September, although the exact date is yet to be confirmed by the university authorities.

Students elect the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and departmental representatives. Issues such as hostel facilities, campus security, fees, infrastructure, placements and student safety are expected to remain important during the election campaign.

Ahead of the elections, security and access arrangements are also likely to remain a key focus, particularly with campaigning and increased student activity expected on campus.

For the Independence Day celebrations, arrangements include security deployment and student participation. Security measures to be monitored on the ground include police and security guard deployment, CCTV surveillance, visitor entry, barricading, parking and emergency medical arrangements.

The participation of NCC and NSS students, along with the parade and cultural programmes, will also form part of the Independence Day preparations. Security officials can provide details about personnel deployment, operational gates and restrictions applicable to students and visitors.

With both Independence Day preparations and the student elections approaching, the university’s security arrangements are expected to remain under close scrutiny as authorities seek to maintain a secure campus environment.
