Sukhbir Singh Badal injured in attack at Nanded Gurdwara

Chandigarh, August 13

Shiromani Akali Dal chief and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked by a Nihang with a sharp weapon, reportedly a kirpan, inside a gurdwara in the Mata Sahib Kaur area of Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday.

The incident occurred around 11 am, shortly after Badal arrived in Nanded from Punjab on a personal visit. He sustained a minor injury to his right hand and was taken to Yashosai Hospital for treatment. He is reported to be out of danger.

Inspector Santosh Kendre, who was part of Badal’s security detail, also suffered minor injuries while attempting to protect him. Police detained the alleged attacker shortly after the incident and are questioning him as the investigation continues.

The attack took place inside the gurdwara premises. Badal is the son of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

The incident comes after a December 2024 attack on him at the Golden Temple, when former Babbar Khalsa International member Narain Singh Chaura opened fire at Badal while he was serving as a ‘sewadar’ at the shrine entrance. Badal escaped unharmed in that incident.
