‘Har Insaan Ka Pehla Mazhab Maa Hai’: Batwara 1947 set to release on August 14

Batwara 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, explores the human cost of the 1947 Partition through a story of displacement, communal tensions, identity and the struggle to preserve humanity amid upheaval.

The film stars Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, M Karan Deol, Khushi Hajare, Kanikka Kapoor and Abhimanyu Singh in key roles. Its recently released trailer offers glimpses of a tense narrative shaped by questions of religion, fear, identity and coexistence.

A prominent line from the trailer, “Har insaan ka pehla mazhab MAA hai”, emphasises the film’s focus on humanity above religious divisions. In another tense exchange, characters are heard saying, “Are you threatening me?” and “You are a dead man.” The trailer also includes a reference to an elderly woman allegedly “spreading Hindu values”, pointing to the communal tensions explored in the film.

Batwara 1947 draws inspiration from writer Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, which is set during Partition and examines relationships and conflicts emerging from mass migration and communal upheaval.

The film’s technical team includes A R Rahman as music composer and Javed Akhtar as lyricist. Santosh Sivan is the director of photography, while Resul Pookutty is associated with sound design. Sally Salgaonkar has edited the film, with Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray handling production design.

Sarthak Kalyani serves as music supervisor and editor, while Prabhakar has contributed solo violin and Suresh Permal has handled the music mix. Ravi Varma is credited for action choreography and Ashirwad Hadkar for colour grading. Rahul Nanda has handled publicity design.

Distributed in India by PVR Pictures, Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in cinemas on August 14, 2026. The film seeks to revisit Partition through the emotions, conflicts and relationships of people who experienced one of the defining events of the subcontinent’s history.
