Orange alert issued for heavy rain in Himachal on August 10–11: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for August 10 and 11, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Himachal Pradesh as monsoon activity is expected to intensify once again across the state.

Director of the Meteorological Center, Shimla, Shobhit Katiyar, said the monsoon would remain active over the next few days and urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid rivers and streams, and follow weather advisories issued by the authorities.

According to the weather office, most parts of Himachal Pradesh are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall until August 9, while Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and parts of Lahaul and Spiti may receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.

Although rainfall activity is expected to ease slightly on August 8 and 9, the IMD said the monsoon is likely to regain strength from August 10, triggering another spell of widespread heavy rainfall across the state.

During the past 24 hours, light to moderate rain was recorded in most parts of Himachal Pradesh. However, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, Bilaspur and Chamba witnessed heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Kangra and Mandi recorded the highest rainfall of around 8 cm, followed by 6 cm in Solan and 5 cm in Shimla.

The IMD warned that heavy rainfall could lead to a sharp rise in the water levels of rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs, increasing the risk of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and falling debris in vulnerable areas. Road blockages, traffic disruptions and damage to agriculture and horticulture are also likely if the forecast materializes.

The Meteorological Center said it is continuously monitoring the weather situation and will issue updated forecasts and warnings as required.
