Kangra gets five new electric buses

Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) Vice Chairman Ajay Verma on Thursday flagged off five new electric buses from the Kangra Bus Stand, marking another step in the state’s push towards sustainable public transport.

Verma inaugurated the buses after a traditional prayer ceremony and also travelled in one of the vehicles along with HRTC officials.

Addressing the gathering, he said HRTC is undergoing rapid modernization under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri. He said the corporation aims to convert 50 percent of its bus fleet into electric vehicles by next year.

Describing the establishment of an electric bus depot in the Kangra Assembly constituency as a significant achievement, Verma said it would strengthen public transport services in the region and support the state’s clean mobility initiatives.

He said HRTC has already inducted 300 electric buses into its fleet across Himachal Pradesh, with five of them now dedicated to serving passengers in the Kangra region.

According to Verma, electric buses will provide a more comfortable and eco-friendly travel experience while reducing operating costs compared to diesel buses, thereby helping improve the corporation’s financial performance.

He also announced that HRTC plans to add another 1,000 electric buses to its fleet in the coming years as part of its long-term strategy to modernize public transport and promote environmentally sustainable mobility across the state.
