Haryana resident held with heroin worth Rs 6 crore in Shimla

The Shimla Police have seized 1.12 kilograms of heroin worth an estimated ₹6 crore and arrested a Haryana resident in what officials described as one of the biggest heroin recoveries in Himachal Pradesh this year.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, ASP Shimla City, Mehar Panwar, said the Special Cell of the District Shimla Police carried out the operation near Shoghi on August 3 based on specific intelligence inputs.

The accused, identified as Vijay Kumar, a resident of Ambala, Haryana, was allegedly transporting a large consignment of heroin from another state for delivery to contacts in the Tara Devi area of Shimla. Police intercepted and arrested him before the consignment could be delivered.

A total of 1 kilogram and 120 grams of heroin was recovered from his possession. According to police, the seized contraband has an estimated international market value of around ₹6 crore. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway.

Panwar said the seizure marks one of the largest heroin recoveries in Himachal Pradesh in 2026 and represents a major blow to an interstate drug trafficking network.

She said Shimla Police have revised their anti-narcotics strategy this year, shifting the focus from routine case registration to targeting major suppliers, identifying backward linkages, and dismantling entire trafficking networks through technical and financial investigations. Authorities are also initiating action against habitual drug traffickers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.

Highlighting previous operations, the ASP said police recovered 562 LSD stamps worth nearly ₹1 crore from New Shimla in March and arrested the main supplier from Kerala. During the investigation, four police personnel were found to be involved. They were arrested and dismissed from service; a total of eight accused were arrested in the case.

In another major operation in April, police recovered 11.5 kilograms of opium and ₹12 lakh in cash from the Kumarsain area. Investigators also seized assets worth ₹53 lakh believed to have been acquired through proceeds of drug trafficking.

According to Shimla Police, illegal properties worth more than ₹4 crore linked to drug traffickers have been confiscated so far in 2026 as part of the district’s intensified campaign against narcotics.
