Snake, 15 hatchlings rescued from Dharamshala college

A female snake and around 15 hatchlings were safely rescued from the Government College Dharamshala campus after they were spotted near the Physics Department, prompting the college administration to issue an advisory urging students to remain cautious during the monsoon season.

The incident comes amid a rise in snake sightings across the Dharamshala region due to continuous rainfall, which has forced reptiles out of their natural habitats.

According to college principal Rakesh Pathania, the snakes were seen near a stone wall close to the Physics Department. The Wildlife Department was immediately informed, and its rescue team reached the campus within 15 to 20 minutes. The team safely rescued the female snake and all the hatchlings without harming the animals.

Pathania advised students to avoid bushes, stone walls, and grassy areas during the rainy season, as snakes often emerge from their burrows after heavy rainfall. He urged students not to attempt to photograph or record videos of snakes, but instead report such sightings immediately to the college administration.

He said the administration is committed to ensuring student safety while also protecting wildlife. Regular grass-cutting and campus cleaning are being carried out across the nearly 200-kanal campus to reduce the risk of encounters with snakes. Herbicides are also being used where necessary to control excessive vegetation.

The principal appealed to students to remain alert during the monsoon and promptly inform the college authorities of any snake sightings or other emergencies.
