Shimla, July 27
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh till July 31, with Orange Alerts issued for several districts as the southwest monsoon is expected to intensify over the state.
According to the Meteorological Center, Shimla, the fresh spell of rain will remain active from July 27 to August 1, with the most intense rainfall likely between the night of July 29 and July 31. Residents have been advised to avoid visiting rivers and streams and to strictly follow weather advisories issued by the authorities.
Speaking to mediapersons, Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Scientist at the Meteorological Center, Shimla, said the monsoon remained active in many parts of the state during the past 24 hours and is expected to strengthen further over the coming days.
He said a Yellow Alert has been issued for Solan and Sirmaur districts on July 27, followed by Bilaspur and Sirmaur on July 28, and Sirmaur on July 29.
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts on July 30, while Una, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra, and Shimla districts will remain under an Orange Alert on July 31, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Sharma said widespread light to moderate rainfall is likely across the state during the spell, with isolated areas expected to receive very heavy rain.
On the possibility of flash floods, he said no immediate threat exists as rainfall during the last 24 hours remained relatively low. However, if weather conditions become favorable during the upcoming spell, the Meteorological Department will issue flash flood bulletins and other advisories as required.
The scientist also shared the rainfall statistics for the ongoing monsoon season. He said Himachal Pradesh has received near-normal rainfall during July. Rainfall has remained below normal only in Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, and Lahaul-Spiti, while the remaining eight districts have recorded normal or above-normal rainfall.
From June 1 to July 27, the state recorded 7 percent below-normal rainfall, which still falls within the IMD’s normal rainfall category, he added.
