Dharamshala, July 3
The Social Justice and Empowerment Department has intensified its anti-drug awareness campaign across Kangra district under the Himachal Pradesh government’s Anti-Chitta initiative, organising outreach programmes in schools, colleges, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnic institutions to educate young people about the dangers of substance abuse.
Sahil Mandla, the District Welfare Officer, said that the department has been conducting regular awareness programmes to inform students about the harmful effects of drugs and encourage them to adopt a healthy and drug-free lifestyle.
He said a special awareness campaign was organised across the district from 21 to 26 June under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
During the campaign, students participated in walkathons, sports competitions, volleyball matches, painting contests and other creative activities designed to raise awareness about the adverse effects of drug abuse.
Mandla said the district is also implementing a Samvaad Programme, under which Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), Tehsil Welfare Officers, Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs), and officials from the Excise and Police Departments are visiting schools to interact directly with students.
“The sessions focus on the growing threat of drug abuse, its social and family consequences, and the scientific reasons why young people fall into addiction. Students are also guided on how they can protect themselves from substance abuse,” he said.
The District Welfare Officer described drug abuse as a serious social challenge that has emerged in Himachal Pradesh in recent years.
“It is essential to reach children and young people with the right awareness at the right time. If students receive proper information and guidance at an early stage, they can be prevented from falling into addiction,” Mandla said.
He added that the department is implementing the campaign effectively through coordinated efforts with various government agencies.
