Tibetans rally in Dharamshala against China’s new law

Dharamshala, July 1

Tibetans and members of four major Tibetan organisations staged a protest in McLeodganj, Dharamshala, against China’s newly implemented Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, which came into effect on July 1. Protesters alleged that the legislation poses a serious threat to Tibetan language, culture, religion and identity.
Leaders of the participating organisations claimed that the law is aimed at enforcing cultural assimilation in Tibet. They alleged that Tibetan children are being sent to boarding schools, distancing them from their mother tongue, cultural heritage and traditional values. They also expressed concern over increasing restrictions on religious practices and cultural expression.
During the demonstration, the organisations urged the United Nations, democratic nations and global leaders to condemn the law, call for an independent international investigation and press China to reverse the measures. They warned that failure to act could place Tibetan identity and cultural heritage at serious risk.
