Shimla, July 1

The monsoon has become fully active in Himachal Pradesh, covering the entire state and bringing rainfall to several areas, including the capital Shimla. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of intense monsoon activity for the next one week.

The department has predicted heavy rainfall on 2, 3 and 5 July, with an orange alert issued for Sirmaur, Shimla, Mandi and Kangra districts. Officials have warned that some areas may experience very heavy rainfall during this period.

Director of the Meteorological Center in Shimla, Shobhit Katiyar, said that this year the monsoon arrived around 5 days later than expected. However, it is likely to remain highly active for the next 5 to 7 days.

He said light to moderate rainfall was recorded in almost all parts of the state during the past 24 hours. Several areas of Kangra district received heavy rainfall, with maximum rainfall recorded up to 10 centimetres.

The weather department has also stated that despite the current active phase, the overall monsoon season rainfall in Himachal Pradesh may remain around 10 percent below normal or even lower.

In view of the heavy rain forecast, the risk of landslides and mudslides has increased in the hilly regions. The administration has advised residents and tourists to stay away from rivers, streams and vulnerable areas.
