Dharamshala, July 1
Director of the Himachal Pradesh Directorate of Forensic Services, Dr Meenakshi Mahajan, on Wednesday said that the internship training is a mandatory component of undergraduate and postgraduate forensic science programs. She said that more than 75 students have completed training this summer. The internship program lasts 15 to 30 days, allowing participants to gain comprehensive practical experience. The Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) in Dharamshala is emerging as a preferred destination for practical forensic science training, attracting students from across India and several foreign countries through its internship program.
The laboratory has become a key center for hands-on learning, enabling students to gain practical experience in crime investigation beyond classroom-based education. Students from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and several other states, along with international interns, are undergoing specialized training at the facility. “During the internship, students are trained using real criminal cases. They learn evidence preservation through the chain of custody, investigation procedures, scientific examination, and the complete process of preparing forensic reports. This enables them to complement academic knowledge with practical experience,” she said.
She added that the training significantly improves students’ employment prospects in both government and private forensic laboratories. Many former trainees are currently serving in various government departments, private institutions and forensic laboratories under the Government of India.
According to Dr Mahajan, the Dharamshala laboratory also attracts students from African countries, Nepal and several other nations, helping the institution establish a growing international reputation in forensic science education.
“The increasing participation of students from India and abroad reflects the laboratory’s growing recognition as a center of excellence for practical forensic science training,” she said.
