Shimla, July 1

The southwest monsoon has entered Himachal Pradesh, covering the entire Kinnaur district and extending to parts of six other districts, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting that it will become active across the entire state within the next two to three days.

The Meteorological Center in Shimla has also issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall from 2 to 4 July across several districts, warning of rainfall as the monsoon strengthens.

According to the weather department, the monsoon has fully covered Kinnaur and advanced into most parts of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti, several areas of Shimla and Mandi, and parts of Sirmaur and Kangra districts. This year’s monsoon has arrived in Himachal Pradesh seven days later than usual.

Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma of the Meteorological Center, Shimla, said the southwest monsoon is expected to become fully active across the state on 2 and 3 July.

“The monsoon has covered the entire Kinnaur district and advanced into most parts of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti, several areas of Shimla and Mandi, and parts of Sirmaur and Kangra. It is expected to become fully active across Himachal Pradesh within the next two to three days,” Sharma said.

He added that Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Kullu are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places between 2 and 4 July. Chamba, Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur may also experience heavy rainfall at several locations during the same period.

With the arrival of the monsoon, rainfall has already begun in several parts of the state. The administration has advised residents and tourists to avoid rivers and seasonal streams, and to remain alert in landslide-prone areas, as heavy rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods and landslides.
