Mohali, June 9
Sarabjit Singh Samana, son of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kulwant Singh, was elected mayor of the Mohali Municipal Corporation on Tuesday following elections held at the civic body’s office.
Rajinder Parshad was elected senior deputy mayor, while Harpal Singh Channa became deputy mayor.
The mayoral election took place after all 50 newly elected councillors of the Municipal Corporation were administered the oath of office. The proceedings were supervised by Rupnagar Division Commissioner Manvesh Singh Sidhu, who served as the convener, while councillor Gurmukh Singh Sohal acted as the presiding officer.
Punjab Cabinet Minister and AAP’s Punjab president Aman Arora, who was deputed by the party leadership to oversee the election process, congratulated the newly elected office-bearers and said the new civic team would work to improve public services and accelerate development in Mohali.
Speaking to reporters, Arora said the state government aimed to develop Mohali into a model city and further speed up infrastructure and civic projects. He added that the results of the recent urban local body elections reflected public support for the policies of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led government.
Elections to eight municipal corporations, including Mohali, along with several other municipal bodies across Punjab, were held on May 26.
