Patiala, May 19
Panic gripped the New Lal Bagh area of Patiala after a 24-year-old MBBS student was allegedly murdered with sharp-edged weapons late on Monday, sending shockwaves across the locality and triggering an intensive police investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Kamaldeep Kumar, a resident of Bareta in Punjab’s Mansa district. He was pursuing his MBBS studies at Government Medical College, Patiala.
According to police officials, information about the incident was received shortly after the attack, following which senior police officers and forensic teams rushed to the spot. The crime scene was cordoned off, and evidence was collected as part of the investigation.
Addressing a press conference, SP City Palwinder Singh Cheema said that, based on statements from the victim’s family, a case has been registered against Kamaldeep’s friend. Police suspect that the accused, who also belongs to Bareta, was involved in the murder. The accused reportedly worked with his father at a shop in Bareta.
Police teams are currently conducting raids and searching for the suspect. Investigators are also scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning local residents to establish the sequence of events leading to the killing.
The motive behind the murder has not yet been disclosed by the police.
The body has been shifted to the mortuary of Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and autopsy report.
