Manali, April 8

The Lahaul and Spiti district administration has restricted movement of vehicles beyond Solang Nullah barrier due to continuous snowfall in the higher reaches of Manali, including the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang Pass, Madhi and Hamta Pass. Only 4×4 vehicles are allowed to travel up to the Atal Tunnel.

This decision follows continuous snowfall since late last night. Higher elevations are seeing light to moderate snowfall, while lower areas are experiencing steady rainfall, leading to a significant drop in temperatures throughout the region.

Residents and tourists have resumed wearing warm clothing to cope with the cold, despite it being April.

Gunjit Singh Cheema, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Manali, said, “Keeping the ongoing snowfall in view and to ensure the safety of the tourists and locals, the administration has currently allowed only 4×4 vehicles to travel beyond the Solang Nullah barrier up to Atal Tunnel.” He urged people to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.

Chhering Thomas, a local resident, said, “Continuous snowfall in the upper areas and rain in the lower regions have caused temperatures to fall sharply. The weather in Manali currently feels more like winter than April.”

The recent snowfall has encouraged tourism operators and is expected to benefit local crops. The administration advises tourists to check weather updates before planning their visit.
