Chandigarh, April 1
An explosion outside the Punjab BJP office in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening caused panic in the area and prompted police to seal off the site, officials said. No casualties were reported.
The blast was heard at around 5pm outside the party office in Sector 37, according to Vineet Joshi, who heads the Punjab BJP’s media cell.
A scooter parked outside the building was damaged in the incident, while marks were also visible on the boundary wall of the premises.
Senior police officers, including Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardip Kaur, reached the spot soon after the explosion. A team from the Central Forensic Laboratory was also called in to examine the scene.
Mr Joshi said party workers heard the explosion but it was not immediately clear what had caused it.
“We heard the sound of the explosion. How did it happen? We could see some signs on the boundary wall. Only police can provide details,” he told reporters.
Calling it a serious matter, he said any blast outside a political party office was a cause for concern.
Police have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the explosion, and investigations are continuing.
Further details are awaited.
