Hamirpur, March 25

The central government has asked states to consider reserving 20 percent of selected government jobs for Agniveers as part of efforts to support their rehabilitation after they complete their four-year service under the Agnipath scheme. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has written to all chief ministers on the matter, Himachal Pradesh’s Sainik Welfare Department Director Brigadier Madan Sheel Sharma (Retd) said on Wednesday.

He said the letter had been received by the state authorities and that the Himachal Pradesh Sainik Welfare Department had submitted a report to the state government for consideration.

According to the proposal, the reservation would apply to a range of uniformed and field posts, including forest guards, mining guards, police constables, firemen, mounted police, jail wardens, Special Police Officers and positions in the State Disaster Response Force.

The move is aimed at providing employment opportunities to Agniveers once the first batch completes its four-year tenure in 2027.

Under the Agnipath recruitment scheme, introduced in 2022, most soldiers recruited as Agniveers serve for four years, with only a smaller number retained for longer service.

Some states have already moved to create quotas for former Agniveers. Haryana has become the first state to implement reservations in uniformed services and certain Group C posts, while Uttarakhand has also announced similar provisions in police and other services.
