The Himachal Pradesh Assembly Budget Session opened on Wednesday with uproar, as opposition BJP legislators accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of misleading the House over loan figures. Before proceedings began, BJP MLAs staged noisy protests and marched to Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania’s chamber, submitting a breach of privilege notice under Rule 75.
Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur alleged that the Chief Minister had made contradictory statements about the state’s borrowing and repayment over the past three years. He pointed to figures presented on different dates that, according to him, did not add up. Thakur questioned how the government could claim to have repaid ₹26,000 crore when the budget provision for loan repayment in 2025–26 was only ₹10,581 crore.
The BJP later issued a statement accusing the Chief minister and his cabinet of repeatedly lying in the House, saying such conduct undermined the dignity of a constitutional office.
The Speaker is expected to examine the notice before deciding on further action.
