City Records Highest August Rainfall in Four Years After Extended Dry Spell

After enduring the driest June and July in over a decade, Chandigarh has seen its highest August rainfall in four years, with 276.3 mm recorded so far this month. According to The Tribune, this total surpasses last August’s 270.2 mm, while previous years saw significantly lower figures of 159.1 mm in 2022 and 168.3 mm in 2021. The local Meteorological Department anticipates that this month’s rainfall will exceed the normal average of 284.8 mm, marking a significant recovery from the earlier dry spell.

Quoting the Director Meteorological Department, Surender Paul, the news outlet said that the increased rainfall is due to the monsoon trough returning to its usual southward position, which has brought consistent rain to the plains. Enhanced activity in the Bay of Bengal has also contributed to the heavier rainfall. Despite this, the overall precipitation from June 1 to August 18 remains 17.5 percent below normal levels, with June being the driest month in 12 years and July experiencing a 35 percent rainfall deficit, the news outlet reported.
