Air India has cancelled several flights after ash clouds from a volcanic eruption in Ethiopia were detected along parts of its operating routes, the airline said on Tuesday. In a statement posted on X, the Air India said it was “closely monitoring the situation” and remained in constant contact with its flight crews as assessments continued. The Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia erupted earlier this week, sending ash into upper air corridors used by multiple international airlines.
Air India said its overall operations had not been significantly affected, but it had grounded and inspected aircraft that had travelled through the affected airspace. The carrier described the move as a precaution and stressed that passenger and crew safety remained its “top priority”.
“All necessary steps under our established precautionary plans are being taken,” the airline said. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to passengers due to this unforeseen situation beyond our control,” the airline added.
