Chandigarh, October 9
In a sharp escalation of the controversy surrounding the death of senior police officer Y. Puran Kumar, his wife Amneet P Kumar on Thursday handed over a strongly worded letter to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in Chandigarh, calling for immediate legal action against those named in her late husband’s suicide note and complaint. Amneet, a serving bureaucrat, has sought the registration of an FIR, suspension and arrest of the accused officials, and permanent security cover for her family. She alleged that “powerful high-ranking officials” of the state police and administration are implicated in the case and have been influencing the ongoing investigation.
In her letter, Amneet described her husband as “a distinguished and decorated police officer” who served the state and nation with integrity and courage. Puran Kumar, a recipient of the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service, was widely regarded as a symbol of honesty and discipline during his career.

She further said he was not only an outstanding officer but also a “pillar of strength” for the Scheduled Caste community, inspiring countless individuals from marginalised groups. His death, she said, has caused “deep sorrow and outrage” and eroded public faith in justice and equality.
According to Amneet, the suicide note left by her husband names those responsible for creating an “atmosphere of harassment, humiliation and mental torture”, which she says directly contributed to his death. She termed the note a “dying declaration” and urged the government to treat it as crucial evidence demanding immediate legal action.
She also criticised the authorities for inaction. “Despite the lapse of more than 48 hours, no FIR has been registered,” she said, alleging that the Chandigarh Police has been slow to act due to the influence of senior officials. She cited provisions under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, which prohibit inquiry delays in such cases.
Amneet said she feared retaliation. “There is serious apprehension in my mind that after this complaint, these high-ranking officials will try to malign me and my family,” she wrote.
Four key demands
- Registration of an FIR against all individuals named in the suicide note and complaint.
- Immediate suspension and arrest of the accused to prevent interference in the probe.
- Permanent security cover for the family, particularly her two daughters.
- Protection of the family’s rights and dignity amid alleged harassment and fear.
She stressed that the case “is not only about one officer’s death” but “a test of faith in justice, equality and the rule of law.”
