India has renewed its diplomatic push for the extradition of fugitives residing in the United Kingdom, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to London. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday said that the matter remains a “point of discussion” between the two governments and confirmed that India continues to press its case for the return of individuals wanted by Indian law enforcement. The issue is expected to be on the agenda during Modi’s July 23–24 visit, where he will hold talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and meet King Charles III. This will be Modi’s fourth official trip to the UK.
“There are a few questions related to fugitives from Indian law and justice in the UK, and these have been a matter of discussion between both sides,” Misri said at a press briefing on Tuesday. “We continue to make the case for these fugitives to be rendered to India,” he added.
Though he did not name names, Indian authorities have long sought the return of several high-profile economic offenders, including businessmen accused of large-scale financial fraud. Misri acknowledged the legal process in the UK can be complex and time-consuming but stressed that India is “following up very closely” with British counterparts.
The Foreign Secretary also flagged India’s growing concern over Khalistani extremism in Britain, calling it a shared threat. “Khalistani extremists should be a concern for our partners as well,” Misri said, pointing to cross-border radicalisation and diaspora-linked threats.
While broader discussions will include trade, defence, climate, and innovation under the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, India is expected to use the occasion to reassert its position on fugitives, diaspora extremism, and security cooperation.
Modi’s UK visit will be followed by a state visit to the Maldives, where he will attend the island nation’s 60th Independence Day celebrations and hold talks with President Mohamed Muizzu.
