Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described India as the world’s most ancient living civilisation, crediting its endurance to the eternal wisdom of saints and seers. Addressing a gathering in tribute to Acharya Shri Vidyanand Ji Muniraj, the Prime Minister said India has sustained itself for thousands of years because of its deeply rooted philosophies and spiritual traditions.

“Our country has endured for millennia because its ideas, philosophical thought, and worldview are eternal,” Modi said, calling Acharya Vidyanand Ji a “modern beacon” of that timeless heritage.

The Prime Minister highlighted the Acharya’s command over multiple languages—including Sanskrit, Kannada, Marathi, and Prakrit—alongside his contributions to literature, religion, classical music, and social welfare. “There was no dimension of life in which the Acharya did not set exemplary standards,” he noted.

Acharya Vidyanand Ji, a Digambar Jain monk, was remembered not only as a spiritual leader but also as a freedom fighter and patriot. Modi praised his life as a symbol of complete detachment and service to the nation.

“He transformed from Surendra Upadhyay into Acharya Shri Vidyanand Ji—a journey from an ordinary man to a transcendent soul,” Modi said, calling it proof that the future is defined not by present circumstances but by one’s purpose and resolve.

Modi also emphasised that the Acharya’s work went beyond spiritual practice. Through initiatives like the Prakrit Bhavan and key philosophical texts such as Jain Darshan and Anekantvad, he carried forward Jain history and inclusivity in thought.

“India is a nation defined by service and guided by humanity,” Modi said, adding that while the world tried to combat violence with violence, India offered the idea of non-violence through its spiritual traditions.

He drew connections between these values and current government schemes such as PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Ayushman Bharat, saying they reflect the spirit of selfless service.

“Our spirit of service is unconditional—beyond self-interest and inspired by selflessness,” he said, adding that the commitment to inclusive development is guided by the ideals of leaders like Acharya Vidyanand Ji.
