Himachal Pradesh Congress president Pratibha Singh has expressed support for her son and state minister Vikramaditya Singh, saying the party leadership in the state must be entrusted to a “strong and prominent” leader. Her remarks come amid growing speculation over a possible change in the Himachal Congress leadership, as the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has   been functioning without a formal state executive committee for nearly six months.

Addressing the issue, Pratibha Singh said the decision of who will lead the organisation lies entirely with the party high command. However, she emphasised that only a “capable and influential” leader should be handed the reins.

“The party president should not just be a formal figurehead, but a strong and effective presence,” she told reporters, adding that the Congress in Himachal needs to stay on the path shown by her late husband, former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Referring to his legacy, Pratibha said, “He never allowed regionalism or factionalism to dominate during his time. Even today, people fondly remember his work done during his six terms as chief minister” she added. Pratibha further said that it was essential for the Congress to carry forward Virbhadra Singh’s legacy of inclusive leadership and organisational unity.

The party high command, she said, is expected to announce the reconstitution of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee soon.
