Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai will take oath as the Chief Justice of India on 14 May, following a formal appointment by the President of India. The Department of Justice has issued the notification after the President signed the warrant of appointment under powers conferred by the Constitution.
Born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985 after enrolling with the Bar. He worked under Barrister Raja S. Bhonsale, former Advocate General and High Court judge, until 1987. He practiced independently in the Bombay High Court until 1990, and then primarily before its Nagpur Bench.
Justice Gavai specialised in constitutional and administrative law and served as Standing Counsel for various public institutions, including the municipal corporations of Nagpur and Amravati, and Amravati University. He also represented several autonomous bodies and corporations in the Vidarbha region.
From August 1992 to July 1993, he held the post of Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench. He was later appointed Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor in January 2000.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 14 November 2003 and became a permanent judge on 12 November 2005. Over the years, he presided over cases at the court’s Principal Seat in Mumbai as well as its benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji.
Justice Gavai joined the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019. In his tenure so far, he has served on around 700 benches and authored approximately 300 judgments across diverse areas, including constitutional law, civil and criminal matters, commercial disputes, arbitration, electricity, education, and environmental law.
He has participated in international conferences in Mongolia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Kenya, and delivered lectures on constitutional and environmental issues at institutions including Columbia University and Harvard University. Justice Gavai is scheduled to retire on 23 November.
