The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and a number of OTT platforms in response to a petition seeking a ban on the streaming of sexually explicit or inappropriate content online. Streaming giants including X Corp, Netflix, Amazon, Ullu Digital, ALTBalaji, MUBI, Google, Apple, and Meta have been asked to respond, the legal news outlet Bar and Bench reported.
While agreeing to hear the petition, the bench noted that its powers in the matter might be limited.
“This is either for the legislature or the executive. As it is, we are facing allegations of encroaching into legislative and executive domains,” the Court observed. “Anyways, we will issue notice.” The Central government was represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who told the Court that some regulations already exist and that further measures are under consideration.
According to the Court’s order, the petition “raises an important concern with regard to the display of various objectionable, obscene and indecent content on OTT platforms and social media.” Mehta said the government would not treat the petition adversely.
