Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has called for urgent lifestyle changes to combat rising cases of fatty liver disease, describing the liver as “one of the most vital organs” whose health is critical for overall well-being. Speaking at a Liver Health Camp organised for Health Ministry officials, Nadda said, “If the liver is not healthy, the entire body suffers.” He warned that fatty liver not only impairs liver function but also increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.

“The good news,” he added, “is that fatty liver is preventable and, to a great extent, reversible through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle and food habits.”

Referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent Mann Ki Baat broadcast, Nadda highlighted the appeal to reduce oil consumption by at least 10% in everyday cooking — a step he described as “small yet powerful” in reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Participants at the camp pledged to make informed food choices, lower their edible oil intake, and promote awareness about obesity. The event was a joint initiative of the Ministry of Health, FSSAI, and the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS).

The ILBS team conducted screenings and assessments, including liver function tests, blood pressure checks, hepatitis screening, and FibroScan diagnostics for liver fat and fibrosis. Personalised nutritional counselling and body composition analyses were also offered, with a strong emphasis on avoiding processed food. FSSAI showcased an educational exhibition promoting millets and liver-friendly diets, in line with the event’s theme: “Food is Medicine”.
