New Delhi, March 31
Home Minister Amit Shah has lauded a significant breakthrough in the country’s war on drugs after the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Delhi Police busted a major narcotics syndicate operating in the Delhi-NCR region. In a post on X, Shah said the Modi government remained committed to its “zero tolerance” policy on drug trafficking. “The NCB and Delhi Police grabbed the gang by its throat and recovered methamphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine worth Rs 27.4 crore. Five people have been arrested. I applaud the NCB and Delhi Police for this major breakthrough,” he said.
The crackdown followed intelligence about an imminent exchange of high-quality methamphetamine in the Chhatarpur area of Delhi. A joint operation by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Delhi Police’s Special Cell led to the interception of a vehicle carrying 5.1kg of crystal methamphetamine, valued at approximately Rs 10.2 crore. The five occupants, including four Nigerian nationals from influential families, were taken into custody.
Further investigations led the officials to an “African kitchen” in West Delhi’s Tilak Nagar, where they uncovered 1.1kg of crystal methamphetamine, 4.1kg of Afghan heroin, and 5.7kg of MDMA (ecstasy pills) with a combined value of Rs 16.4 crore. A follow-up raid at a rented apartment in Greater Noida led to the seizure of an additional 389 grams of Afghan heroin and 26 grams of cocaine.
The NCB and the Delhi Police’s Special Cell believe the syndicate facilitated drug peddling by African youth in India, allegedly using student visas as a cover to remain in the country while trafficking narcotics and engaging in cryptocurrency transactions. Investigations into the broader network and its links to international drug cartels remain ongoing.
The NCB has urged citizens to report any information about drug sales via the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline (1933).
