Punjab Police have arrested a drug smuggler linked to international syndicates and seized 15kg of heroin in a major crackdown under the state’s anti-drug campaign, Yudh Nashean Virudh, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Monday. The accused, identified as Harshpreet Singh from Amritsar, was allegedly retrieving narcotics near the border and distributing them to local peddlers. Police also seized a white Activa scooter used in the operation.
Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was linked to a network involving Gurnam Kallowal, a US-based smuggler, and Pakistan-based trafficker Pahalwan, who allegedly used drones to transport drugs across the border. The Police believe funds were funneled through hawala channels under instructions from foreign handlers.
The arrest comes a day after Tarn Taran Police busted another drug cartel, seizing 6kg of heroin and apprehending two smugglers. Further investigations are underway to expose the wider network, with more arrests expected. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Sadar police station in Tarn Taran.
