Punjab Police shift focus to drug kingpins after crackdown on street supply

Punjab Police has intensified efforts to bust high-level drug networks after a significant reduction in street-level narcotics supply, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday. Sharing details, the DGP said as part of the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign over 4,142 drug smugglers have been arrested, and 146.3 kg of heroin seized. Yadav emphasized that police teams are interrogating arrested peddlers to identify and track key suppliers and kingpins operating in Punjab. Senior police officials have been tasked with mapping drug networks in their districts.

The Punjab Police is introducing urban ‘Mohalla Committees,’ inspired by the success of Village Defence Committees (VDCs) in border areas, to strengthen community-led anti-drug initiatives, he added. DGP Yadav said that the crackdown has resulted in the seizure of large quantities of heroin, opium, poppy husk, and other narcotics, along with ₹5.83 crore in drug-related money. Citizens are urged to report traffickers via the Safe Punjab Anti-Drug Helpline, he said.
