Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed the importance of respecting women as the first step towards societal and national development, stating that India is now on a path of women-led development to accelerate the country’s progress. During an event at Navsari in Gujarat on Saturday, where he launched several developmental projects, the Prime Minister said the government prioritises both respect and convenience for women. He cited the construction of toilets, known as ‘Izzat Ghar’ or ‘house of dignity,’ which has enhanced women’s dignity, as well as initiatives such as opening bank accounts for millions of women, providing Ujjwala cylinders to alleviate the hardships of smoke in kitchens, and extending maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks.
Prime Minister highlighted the government’s legal measures, including the introduction of a strict law against triple talaq to safeguard Muslim women’s rights and the restoration of property rights for women in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370. He also pointed to increasing opportunities for women across sectors such as politics, sports, judiciary, and policing. Modi noted the rise in women holding important positions since 2014, with the highest number of female ministers in the central government and a growing presence of women in Parliament. He praised women’s contributions to India’s startup ecosystem, where nearly half of the startups have women in leadership roles, and acknowledged the achievements of women scientists and pilots.
Reflecting on Gujarat’s example of women-led development, Prime Minister mentioned successful cooperative models like Amul and entrepreneurial ventures such as Lijjat Papad. He recounted welfare initiatives launched during his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, including the Beti Bachao Abhiyan and the Abhayam Helpline, which have been instrumental in empowering women.
Prime Minister underscored the role of women in water conservation through the Jal Jeevan Mission, attributing much of its success to women-led water committees. He lauded Navsari’s achievements in rainwater harvesting and congratulated local women for their contributions.
The Prime Minister emphasised that women are at the forefront of India’s journey toward a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India). He also highlighted the government’s initiatives to support women’s financial independence, such as the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ scheme aimed at increasing the income of self-help group members. Modi concluded by expressing his faith in the talent and resolve of Indian women, pointing to innovative schemes like ‘Namo Drone Didi,’ which integrate women into technology-driven agricultural advancements.
