The Punjab government on Thursday delivered a final blow to drug traffickers under its ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign, demolishing several illegal properties across the state in a determined push to make Punjab drug-free. In a major operation in Amritsar, the municipal corporation, backed by the Punjab Police, used JCB machines to raze two-storied houses and shops built by drug traffickers. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar oversaw the demolition, reinforcing the government’s tough stance against the drug trade.
The demolished properties belonged to notorious drug traffickers Gurmeet Singh and Sandeep Singh, also known as Sonu. Gurmeet Singh faces three criminal cases, with authorities recovering 325 grams of smack and 350 grams of heroin. Sandeep Singh has four cases against him, including three in Sarai Amanat Khan and one with the Anti-Narcotics Force in Mohali.
In a separate operation, Khanna Police and Municipal Council authorities demolished six structures in the local meat market. These buildings were reportedly constructed by encroaching on municipal land and funded with drug money. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jyoti Yadav led the operation, ensuring order during the demolition.
SSP Yadav revealed that the crackdown targeted six drug peddlers, including brothers Aslam and Sunil, who already face five drug-related cases. While Sunil is in judicial custody, Aslam remains at large. Other traffickers, including Shindi, Mohendro, Pappu, and Gulshan, are also implicated in drug and illegal liquor trade cases.
The Khanna police had also frozen three properties belonging to drug peddlers in the Payal sub-division earlier this week. SSP Yadav affirmed that police teams are working round the clock to apprehend the absconding suspects.
