Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has called on the Union government to restore Punjabi as a main subject in the CBSE Class 10 curriculum and include it in the list of regional languages nationwide. In a strongly worded letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Bains condemned the language’s exclusion as an attack on Punjab’s cultural identity.
The move follows the Punjab government’s recent notification making Punjabi a mandatory main subject in all schools across the state, regardless of board affiliation. Bains argued that CBSE’s new exam scheme, which excludes Punjabi from core subjects while retaining Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science, is discriminatory. He also criticized the inclusion of foreign languages like German and French while initially omitting Punjabi.
Calling for an investigation into what he termed a systematic effort to weaken Punjabi, Bains demanded an immediate rollback of CBSE’s proposed changes and a clear commitment to reinstating Punjabi in the curriculum.
